I’m so glad the social safeway is back! That’s right, last night at the new signature martini made its debut before at the gala I went to for the grand re-opening of the redone Social Safeway in Georgetown. It is so much better than the old store! And the party was amazing. My friend Stephanie and I couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw the red carpet entrance and were greeted with flutes of Veuve Clicquot. The new grocery store is so much better than the old one! Who could imagine that a night in a supermarket could be such a gallant affair? But the entire evening was an incredible taste-fest of the most wonderful selection of wine, champagne, cocktails, sushi, mini starbucks tastes!, cheese (this divine blueberry brie flown in from France), éclairs, and more…it was a party down every aisle. There was even a Belvedere vodka fountain!
I bumped into such a great variety of people last night – the lovely nutritionist Katharine Tallmadge, senators, friends, and I even got to meet the assistant White House chef, Sam Kass! He was serving a delicious cucumber avocado chilled soup that was so summery and light.
One of my favorite sections of the new “lifestyle concept” layout of the store is the beautiful 2,500-bottle, climate-controlled cellar. It will be so nice to have a one-stop shop for every time I’m entertaining. The wine went well with the Eric Felten Jazz Orchestra playing Sinatra songs in the background. Michael Quinn will direct the wine room, and they will be offering regular wine and cheese pairings on Thursdays from 5-7pm.
The best part about this new Social Safeway is that it was built sustainably! There are no CFC refrigerants used in the chilled éclair cases ?. The cooling system is completely green, and all of the unsold produce get composted, just like Whole Foods does, and it’s all built to LEED certifications!
Well social safeway, welcome back to the neighborhood!
